Austin and Lake Travis Weather
Winter Our coldest months are December through February, with daytime highs typically in the 50s and 60s and nighttime lows in the 40s. Occasional cold fronts blow through, dropping temperatures further, but they only last a couple days. On average, we have less than 20 days each year where temperatures dip below freezing in the evening. Even when we do get to the freezing temperatures, it's usually only for a few hours overnight.
Austin is a very outdoors-oriented community, and avid golfers, hikers and runners are able to keep going all winter long, with only a few interruptions from cold fronts. Boaters are typically on the lakes about 9 months of the year, but because we have infrequent freezes (and they are mild when they occur), it’s possible to boat all year ‘round with careful maintenance.

You’ll want a warm coat and maybe gloves, but layering is good, because you’ll peel off that coat as soon as the sun comes out. Typically winter has many beautiful days with clear blue skies – not as gray and depressing and some other areas of the country. Sell your snow tires and chains! It is very rare to see snow and it typically lasts less than a day when it comes. Even ice storms melt away within a day or two. Winter is the driest season, with less than 2 inches of precipitation per month, on average.
Spring March through May are mild months, with daytime highs averaging in the 70s and low 80s and nighttime lows in the 50s and low 60s. May is our wettest month, with an average of nearly 5 inches of rain, but it allows for beautiful bluebonnets! Freezes, rare anyway, are typically not seen past early March.

Summer Here’s where you pay for the wonderful weather that you enjoy the other 9 months of the year!
We warm up in June, and typically get our first 90-degree days this month, however it’s still pretty comfortable in June.
The hottest months are July through September, where daytime highs are routinely in the mid to high 90s (sometimes low 100s) and evenings are in the mid to high 70s. Austin averages 111 days per year above 90 degrees, and you can bet that most of those happen during these 3 months.
Summers are dry, averaging 2 to 3 inches of rain per month. We don't get the humidity that the coastal cities do.

Fall We don’t experience the same dramatic color changes that other parts of the country do. You can find richer color, though, with a couple-hour drive into areas of the nearby hill country such as Lost Maples State Park.
For us, Fall means that temperatures are comfortable again, with 70s and 80s throughout much of October and November, and 50s to 60s in the evenings. Many love this season for outdoor sports, camping and hiking.
It’s rare to experience a freeze before December. Austin gets 2 to 3 inches of rain per month in the Fall.

Insurance >Do You Need Mortgage Protection
If you have a mortgage on your home, you may have received several offers from insurance companies that sell coverage to pay off your mortgage in the event you die unexpectedly. Although insurance in general is a good idea, mortgage insurance is usually a poor value in most cases.
If you read the large print, it appears that the policy will protect your family if you die before your mortgage is paid off. All you have to do is fill out the paperwork, have a physical exam, and pay a little more each month. The fine print, however, may limit the coverage relating to accidental death. If there are two people on the deed of trust, the policy may pay only half if one of them dies.
When considering mortgage insurance, call a good insurance agent before you send in your forms. Insurance experts usually advise against separate policies to cover various contingencies. A regular term life insurance policy equal to the amount of your mortgage will probably offer you a lot more coverage for your money.
